Chapter 12

Leonie

Leonie had never expected it to be this comfortable with Kyle.

She’d been beyond anxious about telling him that she was expecting twins. That was a lot of information, and he was obviously already rattled. The dude was a bachelor living the high life. Prior to now, she doubted he’d spent more than fifteen minutes thinking about the reality of having children.

This had to be overwhelming for him. It certainly had been for Paul; in fact, this step right here had been the beginning of the end for them; the prelude to when he bolted.

And she was scared to death that the same thing would happen with Kyle.

Kyle had obviously been nervous. Even with his big-shot personality and power suit, he was clearly out of place in the kids’ store. He’d played it off, and maybe it would have worked with most people, but Leonie felt like she had a deeper connection to him. She felt like she could mostly understand how he thought, especially for someone that she’d only recently met.

The third time he’d ever seen her, they were buying stuff to get ready to have kids. That was huge, regardless of the person, but Kyle was as far on the opposite spectrum from her as he could be. While she liked stability and a drama-free life, Kyle was a bad boy who took risks and was highly ambitious. She’d have been happy to settle down and have a happy family unit, but she got the feeling that without this current situation, Kyle would have been perfectly happy by himself.

Would she scare him off by overloading him with too much, too soon?

A part of her thought that it was a stupid thing to worry about, because that’s what parenting was: being overwhelmed and learning how to do things. And if Kyle was going to be around, he needed to be able to do that. Besides, it was easier to develop that ability now before the kids were actually here. On the other hand… she’d dropped a few bombs on him in the past few days, and she was trying to walk the tightrope of letting him have time to process while trying to avoid feeling like she was hiding anything.

But he’d taken it perfectly! It could literally not have gone smoother, and as she prepared the dinner table the next day, she thanked her lucky stars for him being the kind of person he was. She couldn’t live her life out of fear that the same thing would happen here that had before. She had to just trust Kyle and let herself need help, as hard as it was for her to accept.

Still… the idea of her worlds coming together was a wild one. Kyle was amazing, he really was, but he was hardly the type to sit around and have a modest dinner. This was a test, and a big one, even if she didn’t intend it to be.

She was ready. She’d done everything that she could have to prepare for this and help for it to go smoothly.
